How to Choose Prep Products

• CHG vs. povidone. Chlorhexidine has longer residual activity and is preferred for most surgical preps; povidone is still used for mucous membranes and CHG-allergic patients.
• Respect dry time. CHG-alcohol preps need 3 minutes dry time on dry skin, 1 minute for prep-then-go applications. Wet prep = no antimicrobial effect.
• Applicator design matters. Self-contained applicators reduce contamination risk vs. open bottles and swabsticks.
• Surgical hand scrub is sustained-release. Apply per protocol; don't rinse with antimicrobial-deactivating agents.
